Jean-Claude Van Damme - the legendary Muscles from Brussels - once did his iconic spread between two Volvo Trucks.
During the leadership kick-off workshop at Volvo Group, we, as Mossels from Brossels, drew inspiration from this with a wink.
In this creative personal leadership course, work leaders and team leaders went in search of their own balance, strength and guts.
Using game-based learning and playful methodologies, they discovered their talents, explored their personal leadership, and learned how leadership coaching brings not only insight, but also connection and fun.
A “meant to be” moment between Volvo, Van Damme and the Mossels.
The kick-off was not a classic personal leadership course, but an interactive experience based on game-based learning.
Through the mine game - a game format centred on cooperation, trust and change - participants discovered their natural responses to tension and uncertainty.
Uncovering these patterns revealed unconscious behavioural patterns: how do you react when something unexpected happens? And what does that say about your leadership style?
Not insignificant for managers dealing with change on a daily basis.
Central to this kick-off was our talent model, which is also explained in detail in our e-book ‘Talents in the collective’.
Within Volvo Group, there is an expectation that leaders master all these talents - from decisiveness and empathy to vision and connection.
Yet participants discovered that true leadership is not about excelling at everything, but knowing what gives you energy, where your ikigai lies, and how to use that sustainably.
When you work from your natural strengths, long-term motivation and authentic leadership emerge.
We meanwhile learned that Volvo Group is considering further integrating the talent model into their leadership work - a great confirmation of the impact this programme has had.
First mussel
The session offered not only fun and energy, but also space for vulnerability.
Because those who step into a new leadership role sometimes encounter doubt or uncertainty.
Using creative formats allowed those themes to emerge in a safe and playful way.
The open conversations, recognisable testimonies and humour created a unique dynamic - with care for each other and an angle off.
That is exactly where true leadership emerges.
Personal leadership is not something you develop in a day.
The kick-off planted the first seeds - with insights that will grow further in the next phases, such as the intervisions.
Participants left the session with more self-insight, a dose of energy and, above all, eagerness to keep growing.
A warm thanks to the team of Volvo Trucks for their trust, openness and enthusiasm.
Their commitment to learning, sharing and experimenting made these leadership coaching to an inspiring example of how play, reflection and action can go hand in hand.
We look forward to the next steps in their leadership journey.
